Next national elections may be held by the end of 2025: Speech by Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus

The elections may be held by the end of 2025 or early 2026, but it may take more time to complete the reform process based on national consensus, said Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government. He expressed this optimism in an address to the nation on the occasion of the Great Victory Day at 10 am on Monday. This was his third address after assuming office.

Dr. Yunus said, "The elections may be held by the end of 2025. However, if the necessary reform process has to be implemented based on the recommendations of the Election Commission and the national consensus, then it may take an additional six months."

He noted that the objective of the current government is to organize a neutral, fair and participatory election, which will reflect the aspirations of the people of the country.

The Chief Advisor further said, "Our upcoming elections largely depend on the electoral process and the recommendations of the Constitutional Reform Commission. It is very important to prepare a fair voter list and ensure transparency in the electoral process."

Dr. Yunus highlighted the importance of updating the voter list and said, "In the last three elections, proper participation of voters could not be ensured. Therefore, this time, it is a big responsibility to include everyone in the voter list and ensure the right to vote of new voters."

He further said, "Those who have qualified to become voters in the last 15 years should be included in the list correctly. The young generation will get the opportunity to vote for the first time this time, which will be a memorable experience in their lives."

Addressing the main political parties, Dr. Yunus said, "I have repeatedly requested you to complete the necessary reform activities. Our goal should be to organize an acceptable election based on national consensus."

He said that the responsibilities of the Election Commission have already been newly formed and they have started their preparations.

In his address to the nation, the Chief Advisor emphasized on protecting voting rights. He said, "We can create a tradition where first-time voters will participate in the voting process at 100 percent. If we can ensure this, no government in the future will dare to take away the people's right to vote."

In his speech, Dr. Yunus reiterated the need for national unity and commitment to fair elections. He expressed optimism that the upcoming elections will play an important role in strengthening the democratic future of the country.
